In pure stands of natural or planted forests,the presence of a single tree species can result in a shift in properties away from equilibrium toward unbalanced or extreme conditions.This change in properties,which is called soil by the authors of this paper,occurs because tree species each have unique biological and ecological characteristics(e.g.selective nutrient absorption and utilization).A full understanding of the direction and degree of polarization is important in maintaining the sustainable development of forests and controlling degradation.In this study,the authors measured a broad range of properties in mature stands of pure and mixed forests at multiple sites in the semi-arid,windblown sand region of northern Shaanxi Province,northwesten China.A number of descriptive indices for polarization were proposed,including width of anti-polarization(W),resistance to polarization(R),polarization(P) and ratio of polarization to resistance to polarization(I=P/|R|). The results indicated strong polarization((|P|0.15)) of the followings: biological properties in Pinus tabulaeformis forest;trace element content and chemical properties in Populus simonii forest;biological and chemical properties in Robinia pseudoacacia,Salix matsudana and Caragana microphylla forests;trace elements and biological properties in Hippophae rhamnoides forest;and chemical and biological properties and trace element content in Amorpha fruticosa forest.Among the species in this study,only pure stands of P.tabulaeformis resulted in the depletion of nutrient reserves.In contrast,pure stands of R.pseudoacacia increased fertility.Similarly,pure stands of C.microphylla and S.matsudana increased fertility and improved biological properties.Pure stands of P.simonii,H.rhamnoides and A.fruticosa increased fertility and trace element content.The anti-polarization capacities of the three main forest types were in the order of P.simonii P.tabulaeformis R.pseudoacia.Compared to capacity of resistance to polarization,soil polarization in P.tabulaeformis forest was below the grade of light(I_a≤0.40).Soil polarization in P.simonii forest was in the grade of stable(I_a≤0.15).Soil polarization in R.pseudoacia forest was in the grade of serious(I_a=0.61) for trace elements,moderate(I_a was 0.47~0.54) for biological and chemical properties,and light(I_a=0.40) for physical properties.
