360도 경관을 돌려 보여주며 직접 가 보지 않고도 전체를 보는 것처럼 느끼게 해주는 파노라마 시각은 근래 10여 년간 흔히 볼 수 있는 현상이 됐다. 그러나 스테판 외터만(Stephan Oettermann)이 파노라마가 철저히 19세기적인 것이라고 했다면, 근래의 파노라마 붐 현상은 알렉산더 스트라잇버거(Alexander Streitberger)의 언급대로 “파노라마의 귀환”이며, 그 귀환에는 디지털 기술의 발전이 큰 역할을 했을것이다. 빅터 버긴은 1990년대 후반 이후 파노라마에 기반한 사진/영상작업을 계속해 왔는데, 이 글은 그 중에서도 캐나다 몬트리올의 캐나다 건축 센터(Canadian Centre for Architecture)에서 있었던 전시 《빅터 버긴: 이탈리아로의 여행(Victor Burgin: Voyage to Italy)》(2006)에 나타난 파노라마 작업을 분석해 봄으로써 파노라마에 대한 버긴의 논의를 구체적으로 살펴본다. 파노라마는 안드레아스 구르스키(Andreas Gursky)나 미카엘 스보츠키(Mikhael Subotzky) 등의 현대미술 작품에서 종종 등장할 뿐만 아니라, 최근의 구글 어스 이미지에까지 이어지는 과거로부터 현재까지의 총체적 시각에 대한 열망과도 관계된다는 점에서 중요하다. 따라서 본고에서는 먼저 현대 미술과 19세기에 등장하는 파노라마 이미지를 간략히 살펴본 뒤, 버긴의 사진/영상 작업을 그의‘ 시퀀스-이미지’ 개념과 함께 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 통해 본고는 버긴의 작품에 나타나는 파노라마 시각을 미디어를 통한 총체적 경험에 대한 비판적 작업으로 읽고자 한다.
