Abstract
In the spring of 2005, former NDP attorney general Marion Boyd recommended that the Ontario government allow Muslims to establish Shariah-based tribunals. Similar to the arbitration bodies already in place for Jews and Catholics, the tribunals would rule on family disputes. The proposal unleashed a wave of protest around the world, with demonstrations taking place in Germany, the Netherlands, England and France, as well as across Canada. “We will not tolerate the interference of religion in our justice system,” said one protest organizer.
