Des études récentes sur la pauvreté urbaine au Canada suggèrent une augmentation de la concentration
\nspatiale des résidents à faible revenu au sein des régions métropolitaines. Ce papier examine les
\ntendances dans la concentration intra-urbaine de la pauvreté dans les huit plus grandes régions
\nmétropolitaines canadiennes entre 1986 et 2006. Nous considérons les cinq dimensions de ségrégation
\nidentifiées par Massey et Denton (1988) pour explorer les changements dans la distribution spatiale
\ndes populations à faible revenu : égalité, exposition concentration, agrégation et centralisation.
\nCes indices ont été calculés au niveau des secteurs de recensement en utilisant des données de cinq
\nrecensements canadiens. Nous observons que les profils ségrégatifs des métropoles étudiées sont plus
\ndifférenciés en 2006 qu'en 1986. De même, nos résultats suggèrent qu'en 2006 les populations plus
\npauvres sont localisées dans des espaces restreints, plus homogènes et proches au centre-ville.
\nToutefois, nous avons aussi observé que les zones où la pauvreté a augmenté durant les 20 dernières
\nannées sont surtout localisées dans des espaces éloignés du centre, particulièrement au sein de
\nquartiers localisés dans les banlieues des grandes métropoles.
\nCette division sociospatiale de l'espace urbain où les secteurs de pauvreté sont plus homogènes, mais
\nplus dispersés dans l’espace métropolitain pourrait révéler de nouvelles logiques distributives des
\nespaces de concentration de la pauvreté. À la lumière des mécanismes sociospatiaux qui renforcent
\nl’isolement social des résidents dans les zones les plus désavantagées, ces résultats s’avèrent
\npréoccupants.
