Dans la mesure où elle s’inscrit par définition en creux, et comme en négatif, la notion d’intervalle permet d’explorer avec un regard nouveau la généalogie des médias et l’intermédialité, et plus particulièrement, ici, la compréhension du cinéma quant aux manières multiples et changeantes qu’il a de se situer dans son environnement médiatique. À cette fin, le présent article propose de mettre en perspective le concept d’intervalle avec celui de série culturelle. En tant qu’agent de définition identitaire et, donc, en tant que garant de la « carte d’identité » de chaque média, c’est souvent l’institution qui agit comme gestionnaire des intervalles identitaires qui séparent et distinguent les médias. Pour certains, la salle assure ainsi un intervalle identitaire décisif pour différencier le cinéma des autres façons d’appréhender les images mouvementées. Nous défendrons quant à nous l’idée d’une lecture sérielle appelant à transcender le côté figé de ces intervalles institutionnalisés qui séparent les médias, et à revoir et à réorganiser la cartographie des intervalles médiatiques – en n’hésitant pas à les réinterpréter, à les modifier ou à en créer de nouveaux pour les besoins légitimes de la recherche.
