Abstract

Studies on the characteristics and origin of the Earth’s magnetic field have been developing dramatically. In particular, the recent progress of studies on generation mechanisms of the geomagnetic field through dynamo simulations and physical properties of core material is remarkable. Advances in rock magnetism and paleomagnetism have resulted in an increasing abundance of valuable information on the geomagnetic field in the past. These developments have enabled us to combine observational and theoretical results. They also have enabled us to discuss a possible relation between the geomagnetic field, the Earth’s orbital elements and paleoclimate. Geomagnetism is no longer an isolated research field, but a multidisciplinary endeavor. Masaru Kono, who has just recently retired, has made significant contributions to this integrated field—from geodynamo theory to rock magnetism. To commemorate his achievements, an international session was held during the Japan Geoscience Union Meeting 2006 on “Perspectives of Geomagnetism: Geodynamo, Paleomagnetism, and Rock Magnetism—Tribute to Masaru Kono—(conveners: Toshitsugu Yamazaki, Tadahiro Hatakeyama, Masaki Matsushima, and Yozo Hamano)”. In view of the great success of the session, we propose a proceeding of the international session as a special issue of Earth Planets, and Space. The publication, however, will not be limited to papers presented in the session and, therefore, we encourage contributions from everyone interested. Contributors to this special issue should submit their papers to the EPS editorial office either by post or by e-mail (eps@terrapub.co.jp), following the instructions for regular EPS submission.
