Abstract
Le discours sur le périodique savant au début du XVIIIe siècle est marqué par une rhétorique selon laquelle il ne servirait que l’intérêt du lecteur. Cette étude du Journal littéraire suggère que le fonctionnement du journal savant dépend plutôt du service rendu par le périodique à l’industrie dont il ressort. Une telle publication sert non seulement le lecteur auquel le texte est fourni, mais également les intérêts particuliers du journaliste-écrivain et du libraire-éditeur du journal, ainsi que ceux des auteurs et des éditeurs dont les travaux sont recensés. Le journal savant sert simultanément ces multiples intérêts, tantôt en concurrence et tantôt mutuellement bénéfiques. Un cas de conflit entre représentants de la librairie, Prosper Marchand et Pierre Des Maizeaux, révèle la complexité de la situation.
