Abstract
D’origine française et médiévale, la Mi-Carême a été célébrée dans toutes les régions du Québec de même qu’en Acadie. Ayant atteint leur apogée dans la première moitié du 20e siècle, ces réjouissances collectives, qui consistent à « casser le carême », ont subi ensuite un déclin allant de pair avec l’assouplissement des privations qui marquaient traditionnellement cette période du calendrier liturgique. De nos jours, certaines formes de Mi-Carême actualisées ont survécu dans trois localités du Québec : Fatima aux Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Natashquan sur la Côte-Nord et l’Isle-aux-Grues sur la Côte-du-Sud en face de Montmagny. La situation géographique de ces villages, les voies d’accès limitées, et leur isolement pendant la période hivernale ont-ils favorisé le maintien et la transmission de ces festivités? Sont-elles en continuité avec la tradition ou en rupture avec celle-ci? Un examen minutieux à partir de sources ethnographiques révèle que la pratique n’est pas une survivance mais plutôt une fête renouvelée.
