Les revenus et les conditions de travail des artistes professionnels de la danse sont particulièrement précaires, y compris pour les interprètes les plus renommés ainsi que pour la plupart des chorégraphes. Pourtant, cette profession constitue une figure typique du travail expressif basé sur un haut niveau de réalisation et d’accomplissement de soi. Ce paradoxe du travail artistique, qui associe l’expressivité aux conditions de travail les plus précaires et à la pauvreté, ne peut pas être interprété à partir d’une conception essentialiste de la vocation artistique qui réduirait le travail des artistes soit à du non-travail soit à un travail tellement incertain que la vulnérabilité qu’il génère en serait naturelle. Nous examinons ici comment l’activité des danseuses et des danseurs professionnels de la danse à Montréal s’articule avec différents espaces de socialisation, d’engagement dans le travail et de construction identitaire qui associent paradoxalement réalisation de soi et précarité. Les politiques publiques qui confèrent aux artistes des arts de la scène du Québec un statut légal, mais les placent aux marges du droit du travail, échouent à inverser la précarisation de leurs conditions de travail.
