Abstract
L’œuvre journalistique de Thémiseul de Saint-Hyacinthe, largement oubliée aujourd’hui, mérite pourtant d’être redécouverte. Certes, Saint-Hyacinthe est mort dans le dénuement le plus complet, et son dernier périodique témoigne d’un abandon des principes rédactionnels dont il avait fait l’éloge dans sa jeunesse. Mais, avec le Journal littéraire et L’Europe savante, il a d’abord été le chef de file de petites sociétés de journalistes, qui ont revendiqué et mis en scène un fonctionnement confraternel et égalitaire. Cet idéal d’une parole collective, en rupture complète avec l’impersonnalité traditionnelle des journaux savants, n’aura pas survécu aux tensions et aux crises qui ont divisé ces comités de rédactions. Mais en dépit de leur échec, ces tentatives ont contribué à l’avènement d’un pouvoir journalistique, qui trouve déjà sa légitimité dans la cohérence d’une parole à la fois plurielle et unanime.
