Abstract
This chapter systematically reviews and updates information on temperate agroforestry systems and research in China. It is established that agroforestry has been practised by Chinese farmers for many centuries and it is becoming more and more important because of its sustainable nature under adverse social-environmental conditions such as limited resource availability, population pressure and environmental crises. Numerous agroforestry systems have been adopted successfully throughout the temperate zone in China. The existing agroforestry systems show harmony with the environment and play important roles in modifying microclimate, improving environmental conditions, minimizing natural disasters, and preventing soil erosion and desertification.
