En admettant l’idée selon laquelle le manuel de géographie constitue un carrefour où se formulent différentes idéologies territoriales, nous proposons d’étudier les représentations du fait canadien-français (puis québécois) véhiculées dans les ouvrages produits au Québec entre 1955 et 1978. À partir d’un échantillon de manuels, nous tenterons de mettre en lumière les éléments qui en caractérisent les ruptures. Par l’entremise d’une réflexion entremêlant des appareils théoriques associés aux concepts de référence, d’historicité et de géographicité, nous croiserons des éléments de discussion issus de diverses disciplines. Nous verrons ainsi qu’un schème de représentation, alliant la centralité du religieux, du genre de vie et de l’identité linguistique, prend place dans les manuels maristes, illustrant un rapport au passé, au présent et à l’avenir par le truchement du géographique. En contrepoint, les manuels de la collection Dagenais entament une distanciation sémantique, adoptant au passage un vocabulaire permettant de décrire autrement le milieu. Au tournant des années 1960–1970, les manuels de la collection dirigée par Hamelin et Grenier produisent un nouveau registre discursif pour penser le Québec dans une perspective totalisante. C’est donc dire que le matériel pédagogique destiné à l’enseignement de la géographie a enregistré les mutations référentielles mettant en relief un changement d’horizon quant au devenir de la société québécoise.
