L’industrialisation intense qu’ont connue plusieurs pays du monde
\n(dont le Canada) au cours du XXe siècle a requis une utilisation sans
\ncesse croissante de l’eau pour couvrir les besoins de divers secteurs
\n(chimie, pharmaceutique, pétrochimie, automobile, etc.). Cette
\nactivité industrielle sans précédent, jumelée à une augmentation de
\nla population, a engendré des effluents de plus en plus complexes.
\nAu nombre de ces polluants couramment décelés dans les rejets
\nindustriels et urbains se trouvent les produits pharmaceutiques et de
\nsoins personnels, les pesticides, les produits chimiques industriels et
\ndomestiques, les métaux, les surfactants, etc.
