Louis Laurent Simonin (1830-1886) est un ingénieur mineur marseillais connu aussi bien des scientifiques de son époque que du grand public grâce à ses récits de voyage et ses reportages sur les mines du monde entier. Il est également membre de la Société d’anthropologie de Paris et l’un de ses récits de voyage est cité par Louis Figuier, le vulgarisateur le plus lu de l’époque, dans le contexte d’une comparaison entre la « race rouge » et les hommes préhistoriques. L’analyse de ce passage sera l’occasion de repenser les sciences de l’homme au moment de leur constitution et, plus précisément, d’identifier le réseau de savoirs et de pouvoirs dans lequel le racisme et le colonialisme se montrent comme constitutifs du discours scientifique moderne sur l’homme.
