Abstract
This article focuses on the festival Ciné 32 Indépendance(s) et Création, which has been held since 1998 in Auch, capital of the rural Gers department in southwest France. This festival, which does not belong to the exclusive club of major media events, is nonetheless well known in the region and has been able to develop a loyal audience on a national scale among professionals and fans of arthouse cinema. As part of a broader reflection on the contemporary issues of film festivals, this study is based on 138 semi-structured interviews conducted with the creator of the festival, his team, those involved in the local cultural scene, critics, and festival goers. In particular, it analyzes the contribution made by this festival to territorial cultural dynamics and its effects on local film screenings. The article also questions the notion of independence and the future of the event as new audiovisual services develop.
