Le phénomène du suicide chez les jeunes a augmenté au Québec et dans plusieurs autres régions depuis 1970. D’un point de vue anthropologique, on observe que la société était protégée par un tabou auparavant alors qu’il y a banalisation du suicide plus récemment. Le suicide est associé à plusieurs facteurs bien qu’il soit difficile d’établir clairement la chaîne causale. Il y a d’abord la présence d’un trouble psychiatrique, en particulier la dépression majeure, l’abus d’alcool et de drogues ainsi que les troubles de conduite et de l’impulsivité. Ensuite, il y a les problèmes avec la famille, et plusieurs auteurs croient que le rejet de l’enfant est un élément important. Au niveau social, la violence subie peut jouer un rôle de même que l’effet d’entraînement et les valeurs qui glorifient le courage du suicidé. On peut relever la difficulté de la quête identitaire suite aux failles de transmission intergénérationnelle apparaît comme un élément symbolique majeur. Les blessures narcissiques, le désespoir devant le manque de solutions, la rigidité avec laquelle il voit la vie sont des composantes de la dynamique qui mène le jeune à l’acte suicidaire. Pour mieux intervenir auprès des jeunes, on recommande de reconnaître davantage les signes précurseurs, trouver des stratégies et cibler les groupes à risque élevé.
