Abstract
Sport and Identity in Ancient Greece is not merely another academic book on Greek athletics, nor an overview based on a traditional chronology or region. As the text moves from the Archaic period through the Hellenistic to the Roman world, Zinon Papakonstantinou’s intention is not so much to “set the record straight” about Greek athletics but to show the interaction of sport with the changing social and cultural life of Greek communities by building on his own scholarship and the scholarship of others (1). Papakonstantinou rightly maintains that sport’s popularity and longevity makes it an ideal means to discover identities in the Greek world. Well versed in both primary and secondary sources, Papakonstantinou includes an extensive and up-to-date bibliography, six black-and-white photographs (not all of the highest quality), well-documented footnotes, and a brief index. His book achieves its objective through several scholarly sections; namely, a useful introduction and epilogue that frame five chapters comprised essentially of case studies associating identity and sport.
