Rares sont les études en France qui s’intéressent au mouvement lesbien. Bien souvent, l’accent est mis sur les relations entre féminisme et lesbianisme de même que sur le contexte parisien. L’étude comparée de Rennes et de Paris amène l’auteure à réfléchir aux différentes portes d’entrée du militantisme lesbien (mouvement féministe ou homosexuel) et à analyser les influences du militantisme homosexuel et du militantisme féministe sur le développement du mouvement lesbien. Elle soutient que la centralité et l’ambiguïté des relations féminisme-lesbianisme varient en fonction des espaces géographiques locaux et s’expliquent par les influences plus ou moins grandes qu’ont les mouvements féministe et homosexuel ainsi que leur incidence sur le développement d’une pluralité de traditions militantes lesbiennes au cours des années 80. La recherche menée par l’auteure a finalement pour objectif d’éclairer et de nuancer l’histoire lesbienne ainsi que d’apporter des contributions empiriques au mouvement lesbien rennais et parisien.
