Abstract
Dans l’archipel des Îles-de-la-Madeleine au Québec (Canada), le réseau social Facebook prend une place importante dans les dynamiques communicationnelles. Une ethnographie conduite dans cet archipel sur un tout autre sujet – la chasse aux phoques – a été amenée à utiliser ce médium pour constituer des relations d’enquête en complément de méthodes développées hors ligne. Facebook prend le rôle d’un instrument, parmi d’autres, pour accéder de façon plus aisée à un terrain. Mais son irruption dans une méthodologie pensée initialement hors ligne a induit une réflexion sur l’identité numérique du chercheur, enjeu encore peu abordé dans la littérature. Cet article propose de restituer les doutes qui sont apparus et d’examiner le profil Facebook de l’ethnographe afin de comprendre ce que produit, via le numérique, le débordement des frontières classiques d’une enquête et des engagements du chercheur.
