Abstract
Les élèves pratiquent la grève depuis plus d’un siècle, au Québec et ailleurs sur la planète. Une recherche dans les archives de la presse québécoise et 68 entretiens semi-dirigés ont permis de brosser un portrait − certes incomplet − des grèves d’élèves au Québec, d’en identifier les causes, les formes et surtout leur signification politique du point de vue des élèves. L’expérience de la grève leur permet d’évaluer l’intérêt politique des actions collectives autonomes et souvent de questionner le discours officiel qui réduit la « démocratie » aux élections et aux conseils d’élèves, comme le répètent en choeur le ministère de l’Éducation, l’Assemblée nationale, Élections Québec et plusieurs universitaires spécialistes de l’éducation à la citoyenneté.
