Abstract
Dans les collections de monographies de poche qui ont marqué l’histoire de la critique durant la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle en France, la fabrique du patrimoine littéraire accorde une place décisive à l’iconographie des écrivains. Lorsque Le Seuil lance en 1988 la collection « Les Contemporains », qui tend à reprendre au sein du catalogue de l’éditeur la vocation patrimoniale auparavant dévolue à la série « Écrivains de toujours », le traitement de l’iconographie se voit soumis à une double injonction contradictoire. Dans cette série, la figure de l’auteur se voit nettement minorisée au profit d’une attention portée au travail de l’écriture. Dans le même temps, le principe de la collection veut que chaque volume se centre sur un auteur et propose une iconographie. Face à cette contrainte, les concepteurs de ces livres doivent composer et adoptent plusieurs procédés permettant de conjoindre ces deux impératifs.
