Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

This chapter covers the impacts of geomagnetic storms on ground systems with emphasis on the high voltage power grid. Some additional information is provided describing effects on undersea cable communications and mitigating corrosion on oil and pipelines. The chapter describes the variations of past geomagnetic storms in both locations and time variations. The chapter describes the process of converting incident magnetic fields to electric fields and finally to geomagnetically induced currents (GICs). The impacts of these currents on the operation of large transformers is discussed and how power grids may respond to these currents. The chapter also describes the impacts to the U.S. and Canadian power grids during the Great Geomagnetic Storm from March 13-14, 1989. There is also discussion about the possibility of future extreme storms and their potential impact on power systems. A bibliography is provided for those who wish to study these mechanisms and impacts on their own.

Fetched live from OpenAlex and de-inverted. Abstracts are not stored in this database: the inverted indexes are 8.6 GB of the frame’s 9.3 GB of text, and the host has 13 GB free.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
