Cet article se propose d’examiner les liens informels et amicaux qui s’établirent à la fin du XVIIIe siècle entre certains membres de sociétés britanniques de diffusion de la connaissance, telles la Lunar Society de Birmingham, et des personnalités américaines éminentes comme Benjamin Franklin. Sur le plan scientifique, nous évaluerons quelle put être l’influence de ce dernier sur son collègue britannique Joseph Priestley avant de nous intéresser à l’importance qu’eurent ces échanges dans le développement et la diffusion d’idéologies progressistes. La guerre d’indépendance américaine ainsi que la lutte contre le commerce des esclaves et contre l’esclavagisme lui-même seront ainsi plus particulièrement examinées.
