Abstract
La langue française se diffuse en Égypte au milieu du XIXe siècle, pour acquérir une place importante au sein de l’élite intellectuelle de l’entre-deux-guerres. Néanmoins, le français en Égypte ne se limite pas à une langue de prestige réservée à une élite sociale ; dans la région du canal de Suez, il acquiert un statut original ; son développement est en effet lié à un acteur économique puissant, la Compagnie du canal de Suez. Celle-ci confère au français une valeur professionnelle qui explique sa diffusion parmi les communautés ouvrières. En outre, avec l’enseignement du français, la Compagnie du canal entend poursuivre une mission culturelle et participer au rayonnement de la France en Méditerranée orientale. Dès lors, l’enseignement du français soulève des enjeux politiques et identitaires, et il est contesté avec virulence par les Égyptiens ainsi que par d’autres puissances étrangères.
