Abstract
Les migrants marquent leur occupation d’un nouveau territoire par la dénomination des lieux, en fonction notamment de leurs valeurs culturelles et historiques. Les territoires explorés et occupés depuis Jacques Cartier et Samuel de Champlain sont essentiellement signalés par des toponymes à la sonorité évocatrice de leur terre d’origine, la France, et de leur environnement culturel. La dénomination de la vallée du Saint-Laurent au Québec s’accompagne de plus de l’intégration d’une toponymie utilisée localement par les peuples amérindiens. Champlain profite des connaissances acquises de ses prédécesseurs, et plus particulièrement de celles de Jacques Cartier pour marquer officiellement le territoire de la vallée du Saint-Laurent de noms de lieux qui demeurent encore en usage. Notre exposé se limite à la période de 1603 à 1608, soit l’année de la première exploration de la vallée du Saint-Laurent et celle de la fondation de Québec.
