Abstract
In this chapter, we focus on the causes and consequences of different solitary activities from early childhood to adolescence. We first consider research related to children's nonsocial play activities in peer contexts (e.g., schools, laboratory playrooms), which is comprised primarily of observational studies of younger children. We then discuss research related to time spent alone outside of school, which has focused on the self-reported solitary activities of adolescents. We conclude that although it is of continued interest to explore the implications of how much children and adolescents spend time alone, it is perhaps even more important to consider how youth spend their time alone.
