Abstract
La forme collection est un instrument clé des pratiques éditoriales de l’édition littéraire généraliste contemporaine. La fondation, l’administration ou encore les usages des collections au sein d’une entreprise éditoriale sont des observatoires de la réalité des pratiques éditoriales et des conditions d’existence des livres. À partir de l’examen d’un catalogue, celui des Éditions du Seuil des années 1940 aux années 1980, il s’agit de voir comment la collection, le directeur ou la directrice de collection (et d’autres intermédiaires), mais aussi le « hors collection », rarement considéré en soi, sont des catégories opératoires, des dispositifs techniques destinés à fixer les frontières éditoriales et l’usage des ressources d’une maison d’édition. Ces catégories utilisées par les acteurs d’une entreprise d’édition font l’objet de mobilisations multiples qui dessinent la dynamique objective des projets éditoriaux.
