A komplex rendszerek vizsgálatában mindinkább teret nyert a holisztikus szemlélet, olyan kifejezések válnak egyre népszerűbbekké, mint az “önszerveződés”, a “komplexitás” és a “káosz”. Talbott tanulmányában rövid áttekintést ad az új elméletekről. Rögtön elöljáróban felhívja olvasói figyelmét arra, hogy tanulmányában a természet iránti vágyódás és az attól való legdurvább elszakadni vágyás egyik legfurcsább keverékével fog találkozni. Ez a dilemma erőteljesen jelen van napjaink tudományos gondolkodásában, és mindannyiunk hasznára válhat, ha megismerjük.
