Dans Waterlog. A Swimmer’s Journey Through Britain, livre qui a inspiré de nombreux lecteurs autour du monde, l’environnementaliste britannique Roger Deakin célèbre le « wild swimming » et le contact sensoriel au monde naturel. Sans connaître l’oeuvre de Deakin, l’auteur français Pierre Patrolin a publié en 2012 sa Traversée de la France à la nage, fictionnelle celle-ci. Une lecture croisée révèle que les deux livres articulent une même conception de la nage en eau libre comme activité manifestement subversive, qui s’oppose à la société de consommation numérisée et accélérée. La nage permet ainsi de rétablir le rapport corporel à la nature en activant tous les sens ; elle suscite un état de flux qui impose une certaine lenteur et immerge le nageur dans le moment présent et dans son environnement naturel. En se mouvant au ras de l’eau, le nageur voit se réduire sa perspective visuelle et renonce à la vue englobante qui est associée à la domination de la nature par l’homme. De plus, les deux textes privilégient l’environnement « banal » de leurs territoires nationaux respectifs au lieu de s’intéresser à une nature spectaculaire et sublime. La nage en eau libre est ainsi présentée comme un véritable acte de désobéissance civile, une action revendicative qui conteste la privatisation de la nature et met en pratique le « right to roam ».
