Abstract
Dès leur apparition dans la société coloniale, les métis (mestizos) sont l’objet de toutes les peurs et suspicions du fait de la dualité de leurs origines. Une série de tares leur sont très vite associées, comme celles de la bâtardise et des mauvaises mœurs, contribuant ainsi à leur forger une image infâme. À partir des années 1570, apparaît également de façon récurrente l’accusation d’hérésie, comme argument ultime justifiant leur exclusion sociale. En s’appuyant sur l’ambiguïté qui sous-tendait leur condition, ces accusations tendirent à présenter les métis comme des hérétiques en puissance, officiellement catholiques, mais soupçonnés de pratiquer secrètement le culte indigène, contribuant à donner d’eux une image maléfique.
