Abstract
Cet article s’intéresse aux principales caractéristiques et aux tendances qui ont modelé le lexique français préclassique à partir d’un corpus de mots tirés de l’Histoire de la Nouvelle-France de Marc Lescarbot. Les entrées de l’étude sont organisées en trois grandes catégories : les néologismes, parmi lesquels figurent quelques apports, marginaux ou non, potentiellement attribuables à Marc Lescarbot ; l’ancienne langue et ses éléments archaïsants selon les jugements normatifs développés dès la fin du XVIe siècle ; enfin, les emprunts au latin, aux dialectes, à l’italien et aux langues amérindiennes, dont le pidgin commercial des Amérindiens fondé sur la langue basque.
