Abstract
This study was conducted to examine business excellence programs, and the use of ISO 9004:2000 as a means toward business excellence by Canadian organizations. Through use of quantitative and qualitative research techniques, this investigation offers an initial examination of business excellence within the Canadian context. Depth interviews with recognized quality experts were used as the basis for the subsequent development of a national survey. Results suggest that organization size, location and structure are associated with business excellence program utilization; findings concerning the relationship between industry sector and primary language used in business operation, although explored, were inconclusive. Interestingly, although registration to an ISO 9000 standard does not appear to influence awareness of the ISO 9004 document, it may reflect its usage. Further, the benefits realized by organizations as a result of ISO 9004 use may differ with organizational demographics. Recommendations for future development of these programs is also provided.
