Abstract
Dans les années 1830, le Bas-Canada vit une crise politique et sociale qui aboutit aux Rébellions patriotes de 1837 et 1838. Ces événements ont été analysés par une dizaine de voyageurs et d’observateurs français, comme Tocqueville ou le diplomate Édouard de Pontois. À travers ces écrits, le rapport des Français au Canada se précise, entre attirance pour le voisin étasunien et ignorance envers la colonie perdue. Ensuite, les Français redécouvrent l’histoire de la Nouvelle-France et la persistance des institutions d’Ancien Régime au Bas-Canada saisit vivement leur attention. Le Bas-Canada semble alors être une fenêtre ouverte sur un passé épargné par la Révolution. Enfin, c’est par la question du nationalisme que les Français envisagent les tensions coloniales et la lutte des patriotes canadiens contre le gouvernement britannique. Ainsi s’explique leur soutien aux patriotes qui dans le contexte tendu des relations franco-britanniques a été ignoré par la monarchie de Juillet.
