Abstract
En avril 1989, une crise diplomatique et humanitaire de grande ampleur éclate entre le Sénégal et la Mauritanie. Elle provoque alors de meurtriers affrontements intercommunautaires et des déplacements massifs de populations de part et d’autre de la frontière entre les deux pays. Le rôle joué par les médias en général, la radio en particulier, dans le surgissement et l’amplification des violences, constitue une des grandes variables de cette crise diplomatique aux relents identitaires et politiques très ancrés dans l’histoire précoloniale, coloniale et post-indépendance des deux voisins. L’instrumentalisation de la radio par les pouvoirs en place n’a-t-elle pas exacerbé les nombreux différends opposant mauritaniens et sénégalais au point d’aboutir à un passif humanitaire non encore soldé à ce jour ? Au-delà de cette problématique, se dévoilent surtout à travers cette crise des enjeux politiques et historiques en rapport avec la question de la viabilité et la solidité des projets d’État-nation mis en place au moment des indépendances.
