Christophe Colomb découvre l’île de la Guadeloupe en 1493, mais ce n’est qu’en 1635 que les Français débarquent au nord de la Basse-Terre pour s’y établir. Dès l’année suivante, les colons rejoignent le Sud de l’île. Le partage de l’île entre le gouverneur Houël et son beau-frère Boisseret a pour conséquence la construction de deux forts distincts : celui de Boisseret s’implante sur la commune actuelle de Baillif au sommet d’un morne au pied duquel un bourg se développe, et dont l’évolution nous est connue par plusieurs textes et cartes anciennes. Bien qu’en grande partie aujourd’hui détruit par l’urbanisation du secteur, quelques sondages ont pu être ponctuellement réalisés en 1996, 2001 et 2006. Même si la faible emprise des sondages ne permet pas d’avoir une vision extensive des vestiges, la stratigraphie a pu être étudiée et du mobilier céramique a été mis au jour. Bien calé chronologiquement – puisque le bourg a été définitivement abandonné en 1703 –, le mobilier nous renseigne sur l’activité économique du lieu. La découverte de très nombreuses céramiques de raffinage du sucre est l’occasion de s’interroger sur la provenance de ce type de contenant très spécifique, indispensable à la production sucrière.
