Veterinærinstituttet mottok i høst (september 2020) en sak med forøket dødelighet hos flekksteinbit. Det ble meldt mistanke om respirasjonsproblemer hos fisken. Fisken var klekket i 2016. Flekksteinbiten er en marin fisk som kan leve opptil 40 år, og blir kjønnsmoden først ved 7-10 års alderen. Arten trives på 25-550 meters dyp, og forekommer fra USA og Labrador til Grønland, Færøyene, Island, og langs norskekysten til Svalbard og Novaja Semlja.
