Abstract
愛媛県西条市の道前平野は西条平野と周桑平野からなる。両平野は寡雨な瀬戸内沿岸にあって地表水資源に乏しく，古くから地下水の利用がなされてきた。現在においても，生活用水の地下水依存度はほぼ100％で，地下水の保全と管理は市の重要な政策課題となっている。本報告ではこれまでの調査・研究成果をもとに，両平野における水利用，地下水を含む平野の水収支および地下水の水質の状況をまとめた。そして，両平野とも地下水涵養には水田からの浸透が重要な役割を果たしていること，国営の農業用水事業により流域外からの分水利用が行われている周桑平野に比べて，西条平野では農業用水の地下水依存度が高く，沿岸平野部では灌漑少雨期に地下水の急激な低下と塩水化が生じていることなどを示した。一方，周桑平野では平野周辺の果樹園等での肥料使用により，地下水の硝酸イオン濃度の高い地域が分布することも示した。
