Riffing on <i>Lysistrata</i>: Gender and Social Critique in Spike Lee’s <i>Chi-raq</i>

Abstract
This paper examines how Chi-raq, Spike Lee’s 2015 adaptation of Lysistrata, adopts Aristophanes’ motif of the hypersexual woman and uses it to engage in a broader social critique of the hypermasculinity on which gang culture operates. In the film, women’s hypersexuality is not an opportunity for comedy but a toxic side effect of gang culture. Whereas Aristophanes’ play seeks a return to the pre-war status quo, Lee’s film addresses the underlying structural causes of gang violence and shows women using their sexuality to produce a fundamental cultural change. The result of their efforts is a more egalitarian relationship between men and women.
