Abstract
Numerous psychological studies show that old age is associated with a reduction in performance on some memory tasks. Despite these declines, other cognitive abilities and memory capacities remain intact or even increase with advancing age. Some theories suggest the pattern of physiological changes in the aging brain can account for these effects, whereas others suggest age‐related changes in performance arise because of the ways in which older adults attempt to compensate for these deteriorations. Several theories have been put forth to explain the mechanism underlying the pattern of age‐related changes in abilities.
