Certaines raisons ont été avancées afin d'expliquer cette croyance en une surreprésentation des agresseurs de sexe féminin.La première est une explication de nature démographique.Les données révèlent clairement que les mères sont plus susceptibles de tuer de jeunes enfants, tandis que les pères risquent davantage de tuer des enfants plus âgés (Alder et Polk, 1996; Wilson et Daly, 1994).En effet, la presque totalité des gestes néonaticides (tuer l'enfant dans les 24 premières heures de sa vie) sont commis par des femmes.L'inclusion des néonaticides dans les calculs de proportion contribue donc à une surreprésentation féminine
