Abstract
Als kind wilde Simon Troelstra archeoloog worden. Maar de huisarts – op huisbezoek voor een griepje - waarschuwde hem dat daar ‘geen droog brood in te verdienen viel’. Toen werd het geologie. In de jaren ’60 was hij een van de eerste studenten aardwetenschappen op de Vrije Universiteit. ‘Achteraf besefte ik dat de onderwijservaring van sommige ‘uit de olie-industrie weggeplukte’ docenten nog minimaal was’, vertelt Troelstra. Hij omschrijft zichzelf als een generalist, ‘een geoloog met brede interesse’, en betreurt het dat geologen van een zekere leeftijd al behoorlijk ‘jong’ het veld moeten ruimen. Een generalist is hij altijd gebleven. Zijn onderzoek in het Arctische gebied (Newfoundland, Groenland, Spitsbergen en IJsland) in de afgelopen jaren had als doel een zeer gedetailleerde (hoge resolutie) klimaatreconstructie van het verleden te maken, met de nadruk op regionale verschillen. Hiervoor werkte hij intensief samen met archeologen en andere aardwetenschappers uit een tiental landen. In dit NORCLIM-project, dat onder meer werd uitgevoerd door de sectie paleoklimatologie van de VU in samenwerking met diverse buitenlandse onderzoeksgroepen, werd beoogd een verband te leggen tussen klimaatverandering en de bij archeologen reeds bekende migratiestromen van Arctische volkeren, zoals de Inuit en de Vikingen, in de afgelopen tweeduizend jaar.
