Cet article a pour objet la manière dont la communication orale, dans un grand roman de l’écrit, permet à des personnages de la marge de se négocier une nouvelle place dans l’espace social. Plus spécifiquement, nous examinerons les figures de Jacques Collin et de ses complices – des femmes dont les ressources discursives sont mises de l’avant, et qui, suivant les plans de Collin, se trouvent dans des situations où elles peuvent renverser les rapports de classe. C’est le cas, par exemple, lorsque le baron Nucingen est berné tout à tour par Esther, Europe et Asie. Notre hypothèse consiste à voir, dans le roman, un partage du pouvoir social entre la sphère orale et écrite du discours, qui se conclut, malgré la puissance de l’écriture dans le système social, par la victoire de Collin. Ainsi, les personnages usant stratégiquement de la communication orale auraient les moyens de bouleverser l’ordre social.
