Abstract

We explore whether data literacy is related to tracker abandonment by comparing former and current users of wearable trackers on their data literacy skill. In an online survey, former and current users ( N=233) completed a data literacy scale and then interpreted a heart rate chart which described a person in a dangerous resting heart rate during sleep. We found that these two user groups had similar levels of data literacy on a self-reported scale but current users were better at recognizing the dangerous heart rate data and also better at effectively making use of their data than former users. We discuss the practical implications of our findings to support users' long-term tracker engagement.
