Las defensa por la tierra ha representado para la comunidad de Mezcala, Jalisco, no sólo una forma para reforzar la identidad, sino que conlleva una lucha real y constante que puede llegar a amenazas directas a su forma de vida, e incluso a su vida misma. El hecho de hablar una lengua originaria y portar trajes tradicionales no hacen por sí solos una comunidad, pues la pertenenencia va mucho más allá de los aspectos fotografiables o contables o el reconocimiento de las instituciones. La identidad de esta comunidad, que ha vivido desde tiempos remotos en la Ribera del Lago de Chapala, se teje y sustenta en elementos tan válidos como aquéllos: la defensa de la tierra, su relación con el lago, el cuidado de la isla, la celebración de las fiestas, y ahora, un renovado contacto intergeneracional.
