Abstract
Woonsocket, Rhode Island (population : 41 399 habitants), compte plus de 25 000 habitants d’origine franco-canadienne, connus sous la désignation de « Francos ». En dépouillant partiellement l’annuaire téléphonique, nous avons établi un échantillon représentatif de six cent quarante prénoms (surtout masculins) et noms de famille (recyclés en tant que prénoms) en usage à Woonsocket. Nous avons confronté cette liste (que nous reproduisons en fin d’article) avec les inventaires des prénoms français, québécois et anglo-américains. Les intersections des quatre inventaires de prénoms permettent d’envisager l’évolution et la stratification de notre corpus. Nous avons introduit dans la présente étude les concepts de seuil statistique de visibilité onomastique, insécurité onomastique, censure (autocensure) onomastique, inventaire d’usage onomastique, prénoms amphibies, prénoms témoins et choix méta-onomastique.
