Introduccion: la incidencia de los trastornos temporomandibulares (TTM) alcanza el 50 % en la poblacion adulta y la cefalea puede llegar a ser extremadamente incapacitente en casos graves. Ademas, ambas patologias pueden aparecer de forma simultanea. Por ello es necesario conocer la evidencia cientifica sobre la relacion de ambas patologias en la poblacion adulta. Objetivo: analizar la evidencia cientifica disponible respecto a la relacion entre los trastornos temporomandibulares y las cefaleas en la poblacion adulta. Material y metodo: se realizo una busqueda de articulos observacionales en ingles y castellano en las bases de datos Medline Complete, Cinhal Complete y Academic Search Complete. Se incluyeron articulos en los que analizasen en adultos la relacion entre los TTM y los dolores de cabeza a partir de distintas variables. Se realizo una lectura critica de cada articulo a traves de la plantilla Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. Resultados: ocho articulos cumplieron los criterios de elegibilidad y formaron parte de la presente revision. Seis estudios valoraron como la presencia de trastorno temporomandibular podia influir en las cefaleas, mientras que 3 estudiaron como factor de riesgo la cefalea para comprobar su relacion con los trastornos temporomandibulares. Todos los articulos cumplen los criterios STROBE para estudios observacionales. Conclusion: existe una relacion entre los TTM y las cefaleas, apareciendo ambas patologias de forma simultanea, pese a ser necesario un componente muscular en el TTM para producir una cefalea. Cuanto mayor es el dolor o la gravedad del TTM mas probabilidades hay de sufrir dolor de cabeza. La migrana es el tipo de dolor de cabeza que mas se relaciona con los TTM.
