Abstract
Palaeolimnology is the reconstruction of past environments using information \nrecorded in lake sediments, including preserved biological organisms and chemical \nindicators. A key assumption of palaeolimnology is that undisturbed lake sediments \nmay provide a faithful, continuous record of change over long time periods, ranging \nfrom years to millennia. Using proven methods available for dating lake sediments, \nboth the continuity of the record and the dates of recorded changes may be \nestablished. Palaeolimnology has been widely employed across the world, for \nexample in reconstructing past climate over thousands of years and for the study of \npollutant impacts over the last 200 years following the Industrial Revolution. It is \nparticularly well suited to the study of pollution arising from fossil fuel combustion \nbecause several indicators of pollutant inputs and biological changes may be recorded. \nThe main purpose of this study was to employ various palaeolimnological techniques \nto establish whether there have been chemical or biological changes in lakes in \nNorthern Alberta as a result of the industrial activities associated with exploitation of \nthe Athabasca Oil Sands.
