À l’origine un économiste conventionnel d’inspiration fabienne, E.F. Schumacher (1911-1977) est devenu en 1973 l’auteur de Small is Beautiful: A Study of Economics as if People Mattered , le best-seller qui a fait sa renommée publique. Au cours de son évolution intellectuelle, Schumacher est devenu de plus en plus critique à l’égard de la profession économique, qu’il accusait d’être obsédé par la mesure et inconscient de la qualité, et de promouvoir la croissance économique à un coût environnemental élevé.
