espanolLa geociencia juega un papel importante en la sociedad canadiense. Contribuye a su prosperidad y ayuda en mantener un equilibrio entre desarrollo economico y proteccion ambiental. Los servicios geologicos forman parte de la infraestructura del pais y prestan servicios que no pueden ser prestados por el sector privado. Su mision es la de proporcionar y mantener la base de informacion geocientifica y el peritaje que la industria, el gobierno, y el publico necesitan para el manejo responsable de los recursos de energia y de minerales. Ademas del servicio geologico federal, Canada tiene 12 servicios geologicos provinciales y territoriales. Entre los desafios que enfrentan se incluyen la reduccion de sus presupuestos y la complicacion de su cooperacion por cuestiones constitucionales relacionadas al sistema federal. El Comite Nacional de Servicios Geologicos de Canada ha negociado un Acuerdo Geocientifico Intergubernamental que define las funciones complementarias de los servicios geologicos federal y provinciales/territoriales, y establece los principios de cooperacion y los mecanismos de coordinacion. Se dan ejemplos de proyectos realizados por los servicios geologicos provinciales y territoriales, proyectos realizados por el servicio geologico federal, y proyectos realizados en conjunto. EnglishGeoscience plays an important role in Canadian society. It contributes to prosperity and helps maintain a balance between economic development and environmental protection. Geological surveys are part of the infrastructure of the country and they provide services that cannot be provided by the private sector. Their mission is to develop and maintain the geoscience information base and provide the expert advice that the industry, the government, and the public need for responsible and sustainable management of the mineral and energy resources. In addition to the federal geological survey, Canada has 12 provincial and territorial geological surveys. Budget cuts and complications in their cooperation caused by constitutional issues related to the federal system of government are among the challenges they face. The National Geological Surveys Committee has negotiated an Intergovernmental Geoscience Accord that defines the complementary roles of the federal and provincial/territorial geological surveys, and defines the principles of cooperation and mechanisms of coordination. Examples are given of projects carried out by the provincial and territorial geological surveys, projects carried out by the federal geological survey, and projects carried out jointly. The National Geological Surveys Committee plays an important role in the coordination of government geoscience in the country, and the Intergovernmental Geoscience Accord has led to a notable improvement in cooperation between the geological surveys.
