Abstract
Entre mai 1944 et janvier 1945, les quatre principaux musées d’art du Canada réunissent toutes leurs ressources afin de réaliser la première exposition synthèse d’histoire de la peinture au pays. Le développement de la peinture au Canada 1665-1945 réussit le défi de regrouper près de 200 tableaux proposant ainsi une lecture en continu de la production de plus de 150 artistes regroupés par périodes chronologiques, styles et genres picturaux. Compte tenu du contexte politique, le résultat conduisit à une lecture idéologique du projet, interprété comme une manifestation de la symbiose entre les deux peuples fondateurs du Canada capables de développer une culture commune.
